The birthday girl returns from Canada ---
This week we celebrate another PubNight birthday. Birthday girl Petra
chose the Marriott at Sable Oaks as the celebration location. She
describes it as "comfortable and not too pricey on drinks"
Marriott describes it as, "Nestled on the hill of the scenic yet modern
Sable Oaks community, and just minutes from historic downtown Portland.
The Portland Marriott at Sable Oaks offers a dynamic meeting and
romantic getaway location as versatile as Portland itself -- one of the
most appealing cities in northern New England."
Since I'm notorious for giving directions that are only "almost" right,
I'll reprint Petra's directions verbatim so I can't be blamed if they're
wrong:
"To get there, you drive to the mall, take the road that Burger King,
MacDonalds, Shop and Save, Mario's Eastside, etc are all on and proceed
through the light between car dealer and toy store, up the hill to the
first driveway on the right, go to the hotel! Plenty of parking."
Some other odd things to celebrate:
- Francis Drake, later Sir Francis Drake, completes his circumnavigation
by boat [thanks to PubNight:NY for this tidbit]
- the first mobile telephone service is established on April 4, 1915 [no
that's not a typo!]
- NATO formed on April 4, 1949 [despite it's military origins, the first
NATO military action was in 1994 over Bosnia-Herzegovina]
The skinny:
