Wednesday Pub Night Portland #15 - 7:30 at Top of the East
Back to the Pub Night home page
Fellow Pub Goers,
Welcome to the 15th weekly PubNight:Portland.
This week brings a belated birthday celebration for Demetra. As
specified by the PubNight charter, she got to pick this week's
location. And it is a rather unique one. Probably the best view from
any pub in Portland.
So we're going to take our chances, and hope that the Radisson Eastland
doesn't go out of business in the next 24 hours, and celebrate at the
pub on top of the hotel:
Top of the East
157 High Street
at 7:30 PM
Take the elevator from the hotel lobby to the top floor
It may not be the View atop the Marriot Marquis in Times Square (Home of
PubNight:NY Nos. 36 and 86), but it's ours. And we don't have to put up
with funky smelling subways to get there.
Now, they don't have food there - so if you don't want to drink on an
empty stomach it's best to stop by somewhere along the way. (For those
of you who share my fine culinary epicurean tastes - the nearest Burger
King is out on Forest Avenue past USM, and the nearest McDonalds is over
the bridge in Mill Creek.)
Some interesting trivia about the place:
The Eastland hotel was built in 1927.
It was sold last Thursday at auction for $4.75 million.
The previous owners had bought it for $9 million three years ago.
The new owners also once bought the Stanley hotel in Colorado - set of
the movie "The Shining".
My spell checker suggests that "wasteland" is a more appropriate
replacement for "eastland".
I was going to put a link to the hotel's website, but since they haven't
been paying their Radisson dues, they've been disowned and their website
no longer exists. However - there's always lots of fun (and usually
embarrassing) stuff to find at http://www.pubnight.com/.
See you there.
