Wednesday Pub Night Portland #119 - 6:30 at Norm's

Back to the Pub Night home page

Well, the prelude to tonight's PubNight email comes to us by way of Petra:

Believe it or not but 8.02pm on February 20 this year will be an historic moment in time. It will not be marked by the chiming of any clocks or the ringing of bells, but at that precise time, on that specific date,
something will happen which has not occurred for 1,001 years and will never happen
again.

As the clock ticks over from 8.01pm on Wednesday, February 20, time will, for sixty seconds only,
read in perfect symmetry 2002, 2002, 2002, or to be more precise - 20:02, 20/02, 2002.

This historic event will never have the same poignancy as the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month which marks Armistice Day, but it is an event which has only ever happened once before, and is something which will never be repeated.

The last occasion that time read in such a symmetrical pattern was long
before the days of the digital watch and the 24-hour clock at 10.01am on
January 10, 1001. And because the clock only goes up to 23.59, it is
something that will never happen again.

Given all that, I figured the best place to celebrate would be Time Cafe. But since that's about 300 miles away in Manhattan, I figured maybe that wasn't the best choice. Then I thought about which place in Portland had the largest clock. The WMTW building doesn't have a pub in it so that's out. The next largest clock in town seemed to be at David's. Since that seems more appropriate for a date-night dinner, I chose the next logical place -- another place with someone's first name as its moniker, also on Congress Street, but that serves beer in a relaxed atmosphere. And here's what I came up with:

Norm's
606 Congress Street
6:30 PM
tonight - Wednesday, February 20

If you follow my circuitous logic it all makes sense. See you at PubNight.

- Dan

P.S. - Greg deferred his 20th anniversary celebration until next week, so be sure to join us again next week. And after that, we'll be looking for a home-based PubNight for the first Wednesday in March. Any volunteers?
